SMLL Alum LUCAS GIOLITO Makes MLB Debut

The White Sox promoted Lucas Giolito from Triple-A Charlotte. The right hander will start Monday against the Twins.

The Chicago White Sox have promoted another top prospect. Lucas Giolito will make his debut Monday against the Minnesota Twins. Giolito is the organization’s No. 6 prospect and No. 56 in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. The 23-year-old appeared in six games for the Washington Nationals last season, posting a 6.75 ERA in 21.1 innings.

He appeared to struggle at Triple-A but has been phenomenal is his last five starts. He was 3-1 with a 1.71 ERA in those starts and really dominated the competition. It’ll be interesting to see how he fairs this time around. He struggled last season but hopefully that will change.

The White Sox acquired Giolito fas part of a package from Washington for Adam Eaton. He was a top prospect in the Nationals’ system in 2016.

The White Sox future looks promising. Giolito doesn’t have the added pressure of making his MLB debut. He did that already. That should allow him to focus on hitting his spots and throwing strikes. Wins and losses don’t really matter right now. What matters is guys like him get some experience, so they’re ready for the future.

For the season, he was 6-10 with a 4.48 ERA in 24 games for Triple-A Charlotte. However, he has pitched much better recently. White Sox Manager Rick Renteria told Scott Merkin he’s throwing more strikes and using his secondary pitches effectively. Pitching coach Don Cooper echoes that sentiment saying he looked calm and collected.

We’ll see if he stays with the team after this start. Even if he’s sent down we should see him back in September. This will give fans a preview of what the starting rotation could look like. Carlos Rodon will pitch the other game of the doubleheader on Monday. Reynaldo Lopez is also up with the club. So we’re getting a preview of three guys that could be cornerstones of this rotation.
